College Planning

Things to Know!
​
Tip #1:  Before visiting a college, be sure to contact the admission office to schedule a tour and arrange for an interview and financial aid appointment. Bring your parents.

Tip #2:  Don't wait until your senior year to get involved in activities.  Join a school club or sport, volunteer, or get a job.  Build your resume now.
​
Tip #3: Start preparing and planning for college early.  Research, explore and investigate the variety of colleges and majors available. 
Freshman Year
  • Meet with your guidance counselor. He can help you build an Individual Learning Plan to prepare for your future.

  • Get Involved at school!  Join sports teams, clubs and organizations.  This will help you develop leadership and teamwork skills.

  • Volunteer!  Community service is an important component of the college and scholarship application process.  Don't wait for senior year to volunteer.

  • Start to develop your resume.  Begin to document any activities, leadership, awards or community service  you participate in.  

  • Start to research a variety of career opportunities.  Look at what you enjoy doing and try to find a connection to a career.

  • Begin the college search process.  Start thinking about the type of college you would like to attend.  Where you want to go.  What you are looking for in a college.

Sophomore Year
  • Continue to do well in school.  Update your ILP.  Continue your career and college exploration.​

  • Attend college fairs.  Continue to include your guidance counselor in your planning.

  • Take the PSAT.  Your guidance counselor can help you register.

  • HOBY Leadership Award Applications

Junior year
  • Attend the College Planning Center's Annual College Fair, held at McCoy Stadium.  You can register at the collegeplanningcenter.org

  • Check with your guidance counselor for a list of college representatives that will be visiting your school.  Schedule appointments for the schools you are interested in attending.

  • Begin to compile your college list.  Things to consider are affordability, location, size, ect.

  • Attend the EWG College Planning Information Night.  See your counselor for date and time.

  • Begin to identify teachers to ask for recommendation letters.

  • Continue to narrow your college list.

  • Plan your college visits.  Call the admission office before you visit to arrange a tour.

  • Register for the Spring ACT or SAT. Usually held in May.

  • Plan your Senior year schedule with your counselor.

  • Before you leave for summer break ask two teachers to write you a letter of recommendation for college.

  • Create an account for "The Common App"

Senior Year
  • Begin the college application process using your Common App account.

  • Know your deadlines for Early Action and Early Decision.

  • Take the SAT/ACT again in the fall.

  • Attend the EWG Financial Aid Night in December.  See your counselor for Date and Time.

  • Fill our your FAFSA for in January/February

  • Perform scholarship searches.  Check with the guidance office for local scholarships.
